JP LAW participates in Scott County Schools Career Day

Attorney Jade Peters was thrilled to have the opportunity to participate in Career Day hosted by the Scott County School system this week. Fifty or more exhibitors appeared and it is estimated that 350 students participated in the event. Jade's message to future attorneys was simple: "Small daily efforts over time can make a huge impact. You represent the future of Scott County, and by applying your efforts in school today and tomorrow, you will be better positioned educationally and financially to make a positive impact. Scholarships can be life-changing; but the bulk of them are merit-based and therefore submitting all assignments and making solid daily effort is crucial."

I’m happy to share that I’m starting a new position as City Attorney of Winfield in addition to my private practice. I look forward to serving in this role and working with Mayor Jerry Dodson and his Board of Aldermen.

Retired Teachers Association Meeting, October 2023

I was delighted to be a guest speaker at the retired teachers association's October 2023 meeting and speak briefly about issues that affect the retired population. It was an honor, and of course I also wanted to share with them just how important they (our teachers) are-- not just for educating the minds of the next generation-- but also for inspring students to tackle big dreams and never give up!

PROPERTY LAW PRIMER ON "RIGHTS OF SURVIVORSHIP"

In the legal context, a few words can make a huge difference. If you own property with someone other than your spouse, it is important to know whether your heirs at law or the remaining tenants will take should you pass away. In Tennessee, the default is that property will pass to your heirs �� the conveying document explicitly states "with rights of survivorship." This legal term of art means that ownership rights pass to the remaining tenants.
